Protecting Our Heritage
The heritage of The Hills Shire is a valuable and non-renewable resource. It requires protection to ensure future generations can enjoy our local heritage.
Places of heritage significance assist in the development and interpretation of the Shire's,
- character
- identity and
- cultural history
They may consist of:
- landscapes
- places
- buildings
- structures
- relics or
- works
Their value is more than just their age. They link to phases of history, people and events of great importance.
Preservation & Conservation
The preservation of the Shire's heritage is often in competition with local development.
This is particularly the case in periods of significant urban growth and renewal.
Council's job is to protect this heritage for present and future generations.
Who handles the Shire's Heritage?
In New South Wales, local councils have the responsibility for:
- Identifying places of heritage significance and
- Managing these places
All local councils protect heritage items through their identification in planning instruments including:
Schedule 5 of The Hills Local Environmental Plan 2019 (LEP) also includes a list of:
- heritage items and
- conservation areas
Special provisions apply to these items to:
- ensure their protection,
- help conservation and to
- ensure development is undertaken in a sympathetic manner.
In assessing development applications Council also has regard to the provisions of the The Hills Development Control Plan 2012 - Part C Section 4.
Heritage NSW handles protecting heritage of State significance.
The State Heritage Register under the Heritage Act, 1977 lists several local items.
Proposed works to these items requires the approval of the NSW Heritage Council.
