Bushcare volunteers take on the vital role as protector of our fragile bushland environment, preserving natural flora and fauna and removing that which can be harmful to its future. For any bushcare volunteer it's definitely a hands-on role.

To join a bushcare group listed below, or for any further information regarding bushcare, contact Council's Bushcare Officer on +61 2 9843 0555, email council-enviro@thehills.nsw.gov.au or complete an online volunteer application form.

 

Below is a list of bushcare groups and related organisations who are involved in bushland management activities on public and private land in The Hills Shire.

Bushcare volunteering has now resumed. Bushcare is now operating using a booking system through Eventbrite. For more information, contact Council's Bushcare Officer on +61 2 9843 0555 or email council-enviro@thehills.nsw.gov.au.

Annangrove-Park-Bushcare-Group.png

Annangrove Park Bushcare Group - Annangrove

Annangrove Park is unique in that it contains a number of different vegetation communities including the Critically Endangered Ecological Communities;  Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and Shale Sandstone Transition Forest. There are also a number of threatened plant species found within this reserve and an uncommon and very interesting hanging swamp.

Location: The group meets on the first Sunday of each month, 9am - 12pm at the Community Environment Centre.

Annie Prior/Holland Road Bushcare Group - Glenhaven

The Annie Prior and Holland Road Reserve Bushcare group does not function anymore. However if there are any interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart. Both these reserves are located in Glenhaven and contain the Critically Endangered Shale Sandstone Transition Forest.

Annie Prior Reserve is a small reserve containing Shale Sandstone Transition Forest. This small reserve is in good condition and contains some historic ruins.

Holland reserve is set in Sydney Sandstone Ridge-top Forest. There is a short loop track around the top of the ridge with the most stunning array of wildflowers in late winter, these vary from orchids, endangered species to rare in the area species. This area is a must see.

Due to the excellent condition that the surrounding bushland is in this site, it would be great to start up again.

Bella Vista Farm Park Bushcare Group - Bella Vista

The Bella Vista Farm Bushcare Group does not regularly meet anymore. The works were being undertaken within a remnant of Critically Endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland adjacent to the historic Bella Vista Farm. Previous grant funding set up a rabbit free enclosure to help with the regeneration of a section of this bushland.

Bellbird Creek Bushcare Group- West Pennant Hills

The Bellbird Creek Bushcare Group work in George Thornton Reserve, West Pennant Hills in a remnant of Critically Endangered Blue Gum High Forest.  The site is bounded by residential development on its sides and Bellbird Creek through the centre.

Location: The group meets the second Sunday of each month at the entrance to George Thornton Reserve on Coonara Avenue from 9am – 12pm.

Bidjiwong Community Nursery - Baulkham Hills

Bidjiwong Community Nursery propagates and grows plants for Council’s bushland reserves, special projects and resident giveaways. More information on the Bidjiwong Community Nursery is available here.

Blue Gum Creek Reserve - Annangrove

Blue Gum Creek Reserve contains the vegetation community of Cattai Alluvial Tall Forest. This group has been working along the edge of the creek removing weeds such as Privet and Honeysuckle. The regeneration occurring in the cleared areas has been remarkable.

Location: The group meets at Blue Gum Creek Reserve at the causeway on Blue Gum Road, Annangrove on the second Sunday of each month from 1pm – 4pm. Parking is available through the entrance to the fire trail. The site can also be accessed from O'Keefe Road with parking at the end of the cul-de-sac (10min walk down the fire trail towards Blue Gum Road).

Castle Hill Heritage Park Bushcare Group

Castle Hill Heritage Park is located 2km north of Castle Hill Town Centre. Castle Hill Heritage Park is approximately 21ha in size, in a west facing valley. It is the location of the Third Convict Farm and Asylum.

This park contains Critically Endangered Blue Gum High Forest which The Hills Shire Council has an ongoing commitment towards rehabilitating.

Location: The group meets the fourth Sunday of each month in the middle of the reserve from 9am – 12pm. Enter reserve from Banks Road and follow the path to across the causeway. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Christmas Bush Creek Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Christmas Bush Creek Bushcare Group does not function anymore. However, if there are enough interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart.

The group was working in an area containing Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest and Critically Endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest. The site is bounded by Cross Street, Cary Street and Candowie Crescent. Before the group started work, the area was a solid wall of Small and Large Leaf Privet, with a canopy of Balloon Vine, Madeira Vine and Jasmine on a difficult slope.

This group does not currently have a scheduled meeting day.

Connelly Way Bushcare Group - Kellyville

The Connelly Way Bushcare group is located in the Cattai Creek Conservation Area Reserve, Kellyville and contains the ecological communities Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest and the Critically Endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest. 

This group has been removing Privet, weedy vines and annual weeds as well as replanting areas of low resilience. There have also been sightings of the Powerful Owl in this area, which is listed as Vulnerable in State legislation.

Location: The group meets the third Sunday of each month from 9am – 12pm, in the bushland reserve area at the bottom of Connelly Way. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Crane Road Reserve Bushcare Group - Castle Hill

Crane Road Reserve is located in Castle Hill. This group is working along Bidjigal Creek in an area of Blue Gum High Forest which is listed as a Critically Endangered Ecological Community.

This group has been clearing weeds from along the creek-line and replanting in areas of low resilience. The creekbanks have recently been remediated and replanted. This group is maintaining previously cleared areas and replanting where required.

Location: The group meets the third Sunday of each month from 1pm – 4pm at Maybush Way, Castle Hill.

Crescent Reach Bushcare Group - South Maroota

Crescent Reach Reserve is located at the end of Charcoal Road in South Maroota. It contains the vegetation communities Sandstone Ridgetop Woodland, Sandstone Gully Forest and the endangered River-flat Eucalyptus Forest. Due to its heritage values, only hand weeding and passive maintenance is permitted in this reserve. The group meets on an as-needs basis.

Crestwood Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Crestwood Bushcare Group work along Toongabbie Creek in Sophia Doyle Reserve, Baulkham Hills within a remnant of Critically Endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest. This group is making its way along the creek removing weeds, allowing for native regeneration.

Location: The group meets at Warumbui Ave, Baulkham Hills on the third Saturday of each month from 9am – 12pm.

Currawong Reserve Bushcare Group

Currawong Reserve is located in West Pennant Hills. The group is working in an area of Blue Gum High Forest which is listed as a Critically Endangered Ecological Community under both State and Federal legislation.  This reserve contains Powerful Owl habitat as well. This group has been removing the Privet, weedy vines and annual weeds, allowing for native regeneration to occur. Planting occurs in areas of low resilience.

Location: The group meets the third Sunday of each month from 8am – 12pm on Bellamy Farm Road near the walkway to Timberline Avenue.

Darling Mills Bushcare Group - West Pennant Hills

The Darling Mills Bushcare Group does not function anymore. However, if there are enough interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart. They were working within Shale Sandstone Transition Forest and Sandstone Gully Forest near the junction of Blue Gum Creek and Darling Mills Creek in West Pennant Hills. This group was working along the creek-line removing weeds, allowing for native regeneration.

Location: The group meets at the junction of Darling Mills Creek and Blue Gum Creek at the causeway in North Rocks. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location and scheduling.

Elizabeth Chaffey Bushcare Group - Castle Hill

This group works in an area of Sandstone Gully Forest between the properties along Windarra Place and Cattai Creek. They have been removing weeds and planting in areas of low resilience, whilst maintaining the Asset Protection Zone (APZ).

Location: This group meets behind the houses of Windara Place. Entry to reserve is from Kings Road or Lomandra Circuit on the third Sunday of each month from 9am – 12pm.

Ellerman Park Bushcare Group - Round Corner

Ellerman Park contains a remnant of Sydney Turpentine – Ironbark Forest, 2.12 hectares in size at Pellitt Lane, Round Corner-Dural. There are no creeks or major drainage lines located within this reserve.

This reserve was targeted for restoration due to the vegetation community of Sydney Turpentine –Ironbark Forest being listed as a Critically Endangered Ecological Community. There is very little Sydney Turpentine–Ironbark Forest reserved on public land that contains all stratum of vegetation (ground, mid and canopy).

Grants from the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and the Hawkesbury-Nepean Catchment Management Authority (HNCMA) have been utilised to restore Ellerman Park. 

Location: The group meets the second Sunday of each month at the Round Corner/ Dural Library from 9am – 12pm.

Eric Mobbs Reserve Bushcare Group - Castle Hill

Eric Mobbs Reserve is located at the end of Excelsior Avenue. The Bushcare group has been working around the edge of the ovals, down to the creek. The area is well known for its walking tracks that go around the reserve as well as through Excelsior and Bidjigal Reserves. This reserve is also known to contain habitat and nesting hollows for the Powerful Owl which is listed as Vulnerable under State legislation.

Location: The group meets the fourth Sunday of each month at the amenities block at the end of Excelsior Avenue, Castle Hill from 10am – 1pm.

Greenup Park Bushcare Group - Castle Hill

Greenup Park is located close to the centre of Castle Hill, with the front entrance along Cecil Avenue. The group is working in Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest which is listed as critically endangered under both State and Federal legislation. Works being undertaken in this reserve include skirting vines, removing larger weeds and maintenance weeding, as well as planting in areas of low resilience.

Location: The group meets the third Sunday of each month at the end of Francis Street from 9am – 12pm.

Kenthurst Park Bushcare Group - Kenthurst

The Kenthurst Park Bushcare Group does not function anymore. However, if there are enough interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart. Kenthurst Park Bushcare Group has been working in the area between Roughley Road and the sports fields in an area mapped as Sandstone Ridgetop Woodland. This reserve also contains a number of threatened plant species.

Mill Drive Bushcare Group - North Rocks

This group works in an area of Sandstone Gully Forest surrounding a mown field. The endangered Grey Headed Flying Fox, Dural Land Snail and vulnerable Powerful Owl have all been recorded in this area.

Location: On the Oval, behind Raine Avenue. You can access it from the end of Mill Drive down the fire trail. Please note that access to this site is quite steep. This group meets on the second Sunday of each month from 1pm – 4pm.

O’Regan Reserve Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The O’Regan Reserve Bushcare Group does not function anymore. However, if there are enough interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart. O’Regan Reserve is located in a section of Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest. It is at the top of the Stevenson Creek Catchment which forms part of the Darling Mills Creek Catchment area. O’Regan Reserve Bushcare group started as the result of a clean-up Australia Day project.

Oxlade Street Reserve Bushcare Group - North Kellyville

The Oxlade Street Reserve Bushcare Group is working in a reserve that is situated between Cumberland Plain Woodland and Shale Sandstone Transition Forest, which are both listed as Critically Endangered. This group is helping maintain a planted area by removing weeds and continuing infill planting, which will increase the connectivity between these two plant communities.

Location: The group meets at Oxlade Street Reserve, on Oxlade Street near Windon Ave, North Kellyville on the first Sunday of each month from 9am – 12pm.

Richard Webb Bushcare Group – West Pennant Hills

The Richard Webb Bushcare Group work in Richard Webb Reserve, West Pennant Hills. This group meets at the playground on Aiken Road, and is working along Darling Mills Creek within a remnant of Blue Gum High Forest, which is listed as Critically Endangered.

Location: The group meets at the playground on Aiken Road, West Pennant Hills.

Rowanbrae Crescent Reserve Bushcare Group – Bella Vista

This group does not regularly function anymore. They were maintaining the garden area on either side of the cycleway through Rowanbrae Crescent Reserve by undertaking weed removal, spreading mulch and replacing any lost plants. If there are enough interested parties, it can restart on a regular basis again.

Sawmill Creek Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Saw Mill Creek Bushcare group does not function anymore. However, if there are enough interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart. This group was working behind the houses in Chadworth Place and Munro Street, Baulkham Hills. The ecological communities in this area are mapped as Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest, Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and Coastal Shale Sandstone Transition Forest.

Location: The group met in the bushland behind Chadworth Place. Enter the site via the laneway at the end of Annette Place off Munro Street. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for further information.

Sophia Doyle Reserve Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Sophia Doyle Bushcare Group does not function anymore. However, if there are enough interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart. Sophia Doyle Bushcare group has been working in Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and Cumberland Plain Woodland, both of which are listed as Critically Endangered under both State and Federal legislation. This group has been working here for over 20 years and has transformed this part of the reserve from a Privet and Lantana forest to a remnant area of native vegetation.

Stevenson Creek Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Stevenson Creek Bushcare Group works in Excelsior Reserve in an area of Sandstone Gully Forest along the creek line in Baulkham Hills. This area provides habitat for the Powerful Owl and Grey Headed Flying Fox which are both listed as Vulnerable under State legislation.

Location: The group meets at Cook Street, Baulkham Hills on the first Sunday of each month from 9am – 12pm.

Sunday Nursery Group - Baulkham Hills

Bidjiwong Community Nursery propagates and grows plants for Council’s bushland reserves, special projects and resident giveaways. Activities include potting up, plant propagation, seed cleaning, pot washing and weeding.

Location: The group meets at Ted Horwood Carpark, off Renown Road, Baulkham Hills every fourth Sunday of the month from 9am – 1pm.

The Bush Track Bushcare Group - Glenhaven

The Bush Track Group works in Citadel Crescent Reserve within Sandstone Gully Forest along an unnamed tributary which flows into Cattai Creek in Glenhaven. This reserve also contains threatened plant and animal species.

Location: The group meets at the corner of Linksley Ave and Timber Grove, Glenhaven on the third Sunday of each month from 1pm – 4pm.
