Bushcare volunteers take on the vital role as protector of our fragile bushland environment, preserving natural flora and fauna and removing that which can be harmful to its future. For any bushcare volunteer it's definitely a hands-on role.

To join a bushcare group listed below or for any further information regarding bushcare contact The Hills Shire Council's Bushcare Office (6.30am to 3.30pm, 7 days a week) on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555, email council-enviro@thehills.nsw.gov.au or complete an online volunteer application form.

 

Below is a list of bushcare/landcare groups and related organisations who are involved in bush management activities on public and private land in The Hills Shire.

Annangrove Park Bushcare Group - Annangrove

Annangrove Park has unique bushland located within its boundaries, with several different Vegetation Communities. The Endangered Ecological Communities which the bushcare group work within are Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest, Shale Sandstone Transition Forest, Sandstone Gully Forest and Sydney Sandstone Ridge-top Woodland (which is not endangered). The group also works within an uncommon and very interesting hanging swamp.

Location: The group meets on the second Sunday of the month at the environment centre.

Meeting Time: 9am – 12 Noon

Annie Prior/Holland Road Bushcare Group - Glenhaven

Annie Prior Reserve Bushcare group does not function anymore. However if there are any interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart tomorrow. Annie Prior Reserve is located in Glenhaven and contains the critically endangered Shale Sandstone Transition Forest.

Location: The group alternates location between Annie Prior and Holland Road on the third Sunday of the month. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the correct location that month.

Bella Vista Farm Park Bushcare Group - Bella Vista

The Bella Vista Farm Bushcare Group works within a remnant of the critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland adjacent to the historic Bella Vista Farm.

Location: The group meets at Elizabeth Macarthur Drive, Bella Vista on the third Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 9am – 12pm

Bellamy Farm Reserve Bushcare Group - West Pennant Hills

The Bellamy Farm Bushcare Group work in Bellamy Farm Reserve, West Pennant Hills. This group is working within a remnant of Blue Gum High Forest, which is listed as critically endangered, along an unnamed tributary which flows into Darling Mills Creek.

Location: The group meets at Isobell Ave, West Pennant Hills on the first Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 1pm – 4pm

Bellbird Creek Bushcare Group- West Pennant Hills

The Bellbird Creek Bushcare Group work in George Thornton Reserve, West Pennant Hills. The group is working in Blue Gum High Forest, a Critically Endangered Ecological Community under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The site is bounded by residential development on its sides and the creek at the bottom. 

Location: The group meets the Second Sunday of each month at the entrance to George Thornton Reserve on Coonara Avenue. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Bidjiwong Community Nursery - Baulkham Hills

Bidjiwong Community Nursery propagates and grow plants for Council’s bushland reserves, special projects and resident giveaways. More information on the Bidjiwong Community Nursery is available here.

Location: The group meets at Ted Horwood Carpark, off Renown Road, Baulkham Hills every Saturday of the month.

Meeting Time: 9am – 1pm

Blue Gum Creek Reserve - Annangrove

Location: The group meets at Blue Gum Creek Reserve on Blue Gum Road, Annangrove on the first Saturday of the month. The site can also be accessed from O'Keefe Road with parking at the end of the cul-de-sac (10 minute walk down the fire trail towards Blue Gum Road).

Meeting Time: 2pm - 4pm

Castle Hill Heritage Park Bushcare Group

Castle Hill Heritage Park is located within The Hills Shire Council area, 2km North of Castle Hill Town Centre. Castle Hill Heritage Park is approx 21ha in size, in a West facing valley. It is the location of the Third Convict Farm and Asylum.

The Hills Shire Council has an ongoing commitment towards the rehabilitation of the Blue Gum High Forest within the park.

Location: The group meets the fourth Sunday of each month in the middle of the reserve; drive in through Banks Road and along the path. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Christmas Bush Creek Bushcare Group

The group is working in Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest and Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest. The site is bounded by Cross Street, Cary Street and Candowie Crescent. Before the group started work, the area was a solid wall of small leaf and large leaf privet, with a lovely canopy of Balloon vine, Madeira vine, Jasmine and a giant Coral tree on the corner on a difficult slope.

Connelly Way Bushcare Group

Connelly Way is located within the Cattai Creek conservation, in Kellyville with the ecological community of Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest and Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest which is listed as critically endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act (TSC Act) 1995 the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) 1999.

Location: The group meets the third Saturday of each month in the bushland section at the bottom of Connelly Way. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Crane Road Reserve Bushcare Group

Crane Road Reserve is located in Castle Hill. This group is working along Bidjigal Creek in an area of Blue Gum High Forest which is a critically endangered community under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Location: The group meets the first Saturday of each month at Maybush Way, Castle Hill.

Meeting Time: 1pm - 4pm

Crescent Reach Bushcare Group - South Maroota

Crescent Reach Reserve is located at the end of Charcoal Road in South Maroota. It contains the vegetation communities Sandstone Ridgetop Woodland, Sandstone Gully forest and the endangered River-flat Eucalyptus Forest.

Location: The group meets at the end of Charcoal Road, South Maroota on the first Sunday of every other month.

Meeting Time: 9am – 12pm

Crestwood Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Crestwood Bushcare Group works along Toongabbie Creek in Sophia Doyle Reserve in Baulkham Hills within the critically endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest.

Location: The group meets at Warumbui Ave, Baulkham Hills on the third Saturday of the month.

Meeting Time: 9am – 12pm

Currawong Reserve Bushcare Group

Currawong Reserve is located in West Pennant Hills. The group is working in the Sydney Bioregion, in an area of Blue Gum High Forest which is a critically endangered community under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Location: The group meets the third Sunday of each month at the cleared area of Currawong Reserve in Bellamy Farm Road. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Darling Mills Bushcare Group - West Pennant Hills

The Darling Mills Bushcare Group works within Shale Sandstone Transition Forest and Sandstone Gully Forest near the junction of Blue Gum Creek and Darling Mills Creek in West Pennant Hills.

Location: The group meets at the end of Heidi Place, West Pennant Hills on the second Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 1pm – 4pm

Ellerman Park Bushcare Group - Round Corner

Ellerman Park is a remnant of Sydney Turpentine – Ironbark Forest, 2.12 hectares in size located at Pellitt Lane, Round Corner-Dural. There are no creeks or major drainage lines located within this reserve.

This reserve was targeted for restoration due the vegetation community of Sydney Turpentine –Ironbark Forest being listed as a Critically Endangered Ecological Community. There is very little Sydney Turpentine–Ironbark Forest reserved on public land that contains all stratum of vegetation (ground, mid and canopy).

Grants from the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and the Hawkesbury-Nepean Catchment Management Authority (HNCMA) have been utilised to restore Ellerman Park.

Eric Mobbs Reserve Bushcare Group

Eric Mobbs Reserve is located at the end of Excelsior Avenue. The Bushcare group has been working around the edge of the ovals and down to the creek. The area is well known for the walking tracks around the ovals and is the start of the walking tracks through Excelsior and Bidgjal Reserves.

Location: The group meets the fourth Sunday of each month at the amenities block at the end of Excelsior Avenue, Castle Hill.  This group has a BBQ after each session. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the correct location for that month.

Greenup Park Bushcare Group

Greenup Park is located close to the centre of Castle Hill, with the front entrance on Cecil Avenue. The group is working in the Sydney Bioregion, where the plant community of the site is Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and Blue Gum High Forest. Both of these plant communities are listed as critically endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Holland Reserve Bushcare Group

Holland Reserve Bushcare group does not function anymore. However if there are any interested parties who would like to reform this group, it can restart tomorrow. Holland reserve is set in Sydney Sandstone Ridge-top Forest. There is a short loop track around the top of the ridge with the most stunning array of wildflowers in late winter, these vary from orchids, endangered species to rare in the area species. This area is a must see.

Due to the excellent condition that the surrounding bushland is in this site would be great to start up again.

Location: Holland Reserve off Holland Road in Glenhaven on the third Sunday of the month.

Kenthurst Park Bushcare Group - Kenthurst

Kenthurst Park Bushcare Group work at Kenthurst Park, Kenthurst in an area of Sandstone Ridgetop Woodland around the sports fields.

Location: The group meets at Kenthurst Park on Roughley Road, Kenthurst on the third Saturday of the month.

Meeting Time: 8am – 11am

Knightsbridge Bushcare Group - Castle Hill

The Knightsbridge Bushcare Group work in Castle Glen Reserve within an area of the critically endangered Shale Sandstone Transition Forest.

Location: The group meets near the baseball fields at Castle Glen Reserve Ridgecrop Drive, Castle Hill on the first Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 10am – 1pm

Maria Iori Bushcare Group

Maria Iori Bushcare group is located on Mile End Road - Part of the site which the group is looking after is under power lines, therefore there are no trees in this community, and it has been classified as a modified heath.

Location: The group meets the 1st Sunday of each month near the entrance of the reserve on Mile End road. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the correct location for that month.

Mill Drive Bushcare Group - North Rocks

Location: On the Oval, behind Raine Avenue. You can access it from the end of Mill Drive down the fire trail. Please contact Council’s Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 to find out the exact location. This group meets on the third Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 1pm – 4pm

O’Regan Reserve Bushcare Group

O’Regan reserve is located in Sydney Sandstone Gully forest. It is at the top of the Stevenson Creek Catchment in the Darling Mills Creek Catchment area. O’Regan reserve bushcare group started as the result of a clean-up Australia Day project.

Oxlade Street Reserve Bushcare Group

The Oxlade Street Reserve Bushcare Group is working in a reserve that is situated between Cumberland Plain Woodland and Shale Sandstone Transition Forest, which are both listed as critically endangered. This group is helping maintain a planted area which will increase the connectivity between these two plant communities.

Location: The group meets at Oxlade Street Reserve, Kellyville on the 1st Saturday of each month.

Meeting Time: 9am – 12pm

Rowanbrae Crescent Reserve Bushcare/Gardencare Group

This group maintains the area by undertaking weed removal, spreading more mulch and replacing any lost plants.

Location: The group meets the first Saturday of each month at Rowanbrae Crescent Reserve, at the picnic shelter.

Meeting Time: 2pm – 4pm

Sawmill Creek Bushcare Group

The Saw Mill Creek bushcare group is working behind the houses in Chadworth Place and Munro Street, Baulkham Hills. The ecological community that the group is working has been classified as Sydney Sandstone Gully Forest, Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and Shale Sandstone Transition Forest.

Location: The group meets on the 2nd Sunday of each month in the bushland behind Chadworth Place, enter the site via Annette Place off Munro Street. Please call the Bushcare Office on +61 2 9843 0108 or +61 2 9843 0555 for the exact location for that month.

Sophia Doyle Reserve Bushcare Group

Sophia Doyle Bushcare group is working in mainly Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and some Cumberland Plain Woodland, both of which are listed as critically endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act (TSC Act) 1995 the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) 1999.

Stephensons Creek Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

The Stephensons Creek Bushcare Group works in Excelsior Reserve within Sandstone Gully Forest above Stevensons Creek in Baulkham Hills.

Location: The group meets at Cook Street, Baulkham Hills on the 3rd Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 1pm - 4pm.

The Bush Track Group works in Citadel Crescent Reserve within Sandstone Gully Forest along an unnamed tributary which flows into Cattai Creek in Glenhaven.

Location: The group meets at the corner of Linksley Ave and Timber Grove, Glenhaven on the second Sunday of the month.

Meeting Time: 10am – 12pm

William Joyce Reserve Bushcare Group - Baulkham Hills

Location: The group meets at Marina Road, Baulkham Hills.
