Skip Bin, Shipping Container or POD Placement

As Skip Bins, Shipping Container/POD are unregistered and uninsured articles they MUST NOT BE PLACED ON ANY PART OF THE ROADWAY.

Any application to Council to place the Skip Bin, Shipping Container/POD on part of/wholly on the roadway WILL NOT be given permission. 

Council reserves the right to order the removal of the waste storage container at any time if such a container, or the activity associated with it, is considered to cause a nuisance or danger to the public. Fines may apply.

 

Where are you placing the Skip Bin, Shipping Container or POD?

The following information will determine whether you can place the Skip Bin, Shipping Container/ POD without the need to request approval or pay any fees (including a bond).

If possible please locate the Skip Bin, Shipping Container/POD completely within your property boundary (not on any part of the nature strip) to ensure pedestrians can still use the nature strip. 

I can place the Skip Bin, Shipping Container or POD wholly on my private property (not on any part of the nature strip)

You May Proceed with the placement of your Skip Bin, Shipping Container or POD - No Fee or Consent from Council is Required

Under the Local Approvals Policy no Council fee or approval required for the placement of your Skip Bin, Shipping Container/POD wholly within your property.

Please note the following conditions still apply:

  • The container shall be well maintained and clearly marked with the name of the supplier including a 24 hour contact telephone number. 
  • The container shall not remain in place for more than seven (7) consecutive days. 
  • The container shall not be used for putrescible or hazardous waste. 
  • The applicant is responsible for the cost of repairs to Council assets that may be damaged during the placement and removal of the container. 
  • The area around the container must be kept clean and tidy at all times.

Council may order the removal of waste storage container at any time if such a container, or the activity associated with it is considered to cause a nuisance or danger to the public.

I need to place part or all of the Skip Bin, Shipping Container or POD on the nature strip

You may not need to apply for consent if you meet all of the following exemption criteria:

If the size of the container is 8 cubic metre or less (bins 8 cubic metre and under) you do not require approval.

If the container is in a residential zone and not a business/commercial area you do not require approval to proceed.

Do not place the container immediately adjacent to a travelling lane on a Transport for NSW controlled State Arterial Road or a Council controlled Sub-Arterial Road*

 

The following criteria must also be met:

  • The container should be placed to maintain pedestrian access at all times
  • The container must be well maintained and clearly marked with the name of the supplier including a 24 hour contact telephone number
  • The container is not in place for a period exceeding 7 consecutive calendar days
  • The container is not used for putrescible or hazardous waste
  • The container hirer is responsible for keeping the area around the container clean and tidy at all times.
  • The container supplier has a minimum, Public Liability of $20,000,000 - details of the Suppliers Public Liability Policy (endorsed to note Council’s interest) shall be supplied to Council – prior to placement of any container.

Please note: The container hirer is responsible for the cost for the repairs to Council assets that may be damaged during the placement and removal of the container.

I cannot meet all of the exemption criteria above and will need to apply for Council consent
