Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Rose Garden (formerly the Roxborough Park Rose Garden) located in the Alfred Henry Whaling Memorial Reserve was established in 1972 and is regarded as one of the largest of its kind in the Sydney region, occupying over 8000 square metres.

In 2023 the rose garden was renamed in dedication to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022 after reigning for 70 years.

The decision to rename the rose garden follows a Mayoral Minute in September 2022 by the Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi, to rename a Hills Shire park, building or significant place in her honour.

The original concept design for the gardens was prepared by the Senior Landscape Designer of the Royal Botanic Gardens. The retaining walls, constructed of natural rock have created four terraces bisected by a flight of steps finished in Cowra Slate.

The circular rotunda provides an ideal retreat to admire the display of climbing scented roses while the grassed open area allows a place to rest and admire the beauty of the gardens.

Rose Garden and Fountain

There are more than 100 varieties to view, with many examples being donated by local nurseries and rose societies.  Each rose has been placed to provide maximum colour contrast, coupled with the distinctive array of perfumes.

Some of the special roses on display are the Australian Bi-Centennial Rose, The Hills Shire Council Rose and the Olympic Gold Rose.

The Rose Garden is open to the public however it is not a bookable space - if you wish to visit the gardens, please be aware that you will not have exclusive use of the area.

In 2023 an extensive refurbishment of the Rose Garden was completed. This work included the demolition, removal and replacement of the following:

  • The main central staircase through the garden to include sandstone steps and risers
  • All garden bed edging from bush rock sandstone to metal
  • Paths of concrete and coloured bitumen
  • Bush rock sandstone retaining walls
  • Underground irrigation system
  • Asphalting of maintenance access paths
  • Turf and garden bed reinstatement

Visitors to the rose garden can also enjoy coffee and other refreshments at Waves Fitness & Aquatic Centre which is located nearby.
