With cherry blossoms in full bloom and Japan on everyone's minds, there's never been a better time to explore the intricate art of bonsai.

As part of this year's Orange Blossom Festival, the Bonsai Society of Australia Inc. will be holding its annual show in the Harvey Lowe Pavilion at Castle Hill Showground on Friday, 6 September, 10am – 4pm to Sunday, 8 September, 10am – 3pm. They will display vast exotic and native Australian bonsais with demonstrations from renowned bonsai artists Andrew Edge and Evan Marsh.

"Beautiful living works of art can be created with bonsai, which makes stunning features in their gardens," said Ingrid Bauer from the Bonsai Society of Australia Inc.

This 1000-year-old Japanese art form involves replicating a tree or nature on a miniature scale in a pot, which is why "Bonsai" means "planted in a container" when directly translated.

Since 1964, the Bonsai Society of Australia, Inc. has shared its knowledge and love for the practice with the local community.

"We are one of the oldest bonsai societies in Australia and welcome all types of bonsai enthusiasts, from beginners to advanced. We love spreading the knowledge and experience to our many members," Ingrid said.

One common misconception is that this art form is only for Japanese trees, but native Australian species can make beautiful bonsai, too.

"Australian bonsai trees have a much more natural styling, upward branching as opposed to Japanese styling of lowering branches," Ingrid added.

Despite being an ancient art form, it has been proven to be quite popular among all ages, with its youngest member being 13 years old and the oldest being 89.

This annual show is not only age-inclusive but skill-inclusive as well.

"It will have something for everyone, from the most advanced bonsai enthusiasts, who can appreciate the quality trees of our very talented members, to those who are beginners, who can learn what bonsai can be done in Australia."

If you want to see how the native Australian trees found in your backyard are being transformed into beautiful living bonsai, you can find out more on the Orange Blossom Festival website.
