Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne joined pre-schoolers at Ellerman Child Care Centre on Wednesday, March 21 as part of Harmony Day celebrations.

Children and teachers at the Council-owned child care facility, based in Dural, celebrated the special day with the creation of a mural made from sketches of their hands, they iced hand shaped cookies and they read harmony themed stories.

Mayor Byrne said Harmony Day is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the inclusive nature of Australia and promote respect and understanding – starting right here in our own community.

“Acceptance, tolerance and considering another person’s point of view – all of these are qualities that help us build a more harmonious Hills Shire,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Our Council makes decisions based on a number of themes that people in our community told us were important to them. One of those themes is ‘building vibrant communities’.

“As a Council, we provide all of those things that people need to not only live comfortably, but also to have opportunities to participate fully in our community and connect with one another more easily, including building more roads, footpaths, open spaces, sporting fields and so much more.

“I had a fantastic time celebrating Harmony Day at Ellerman Child Care Centre and I am so proud to belong to such a diverse and accepting community,” Mayor Byrne added.

Harmony Day is celebrated around the nation on March 21, coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
