Mayor of The Hills Shire, Councillor Yvonne Keane joined the Maltese Group on Friday, August 18 to celebrate the local group’s 10th anniversary at The Hills Community Care Social Day Program that meets at Council’s Building 15 at Balcombe Heights Estate.

The Group, which is organised through the Hills Community Care attracts around 35 clients who meet regularly for social day activities including lunch.

The Group also goes on day outings once per month and clients all share in the fact that they have a connection with Malta – either through migrating to Australia from the European country or they are a direct descendant of a Maltese relative.

Mayor Keane congratulated the group on its success and longevity in The Hills.

“On behalf of The Hills Shire Council, I would like to congratulate the Maltese Group on their 10th anniversary,” Mayor Keane said.

“During the past decade, the Maltese Group has helped to promote the Maltese heritage in the Hills Shire by nurturing a strong sense of community spirit, and bringing people together in the celebration of Maltese culture.

“As a long-time supporter of the Shire’s diverse communities, I congratulate the Maltese Group on all it has done to support multiculturalism in our region over the many years.

“Your Group is a great example of a community pillar deeply engaged in contributing to the ongoing cultural vitality and quality of life for the people of The Hills.

“I wish the Maltese Group all the best and continued success after 10 years of achievement.”

The Maltese Group is one of a number of groups who attend the centre as part of the Hills Community Care program.

Mayor Keane said Council, as the service provider, provides a number of social day care and respite opportunities for residents.

“Hills Community Care provides essential programs for our senior citizens and people with disability to help connect them through participation in various social activities such as dancing, card games, karaoke and so much more,” Mayor Keane said.

“It’s a very special place where residents can go socialise, make new friends, share a story or two and enjoy a cup of tea and a nice meal.

“We also have another two ethnic social groups who meet regularly and are very popular with residents of the Chinese and Korean background.

“It is essential that our seniors and people with disability are kept safe and healthy while still remaining connected to their communities with as much independence as possible,” Mayor Keane added.

People can gain access to the service via the Australian Government – My Aged Care Service.
