A section of River Road, Wisemans Ferry will remain closed indefinitely following a rockfall that caused significant damage and could pose a further risk to motorists.
The rockfall occurred early in the morning on Tuesday 18 June approximately 400 metres past the Webbs Creek Ferry crossing. It caused extensive damage to the road surface and guardrails.
Council’s geotechnical consultants have conducted a site inspection and recommended the road remain closed. The area was deemed too unsafe to start clearing or repair works.
A geotechnical assessment is underway and will require time for our consultants to assess the situation and recommend an appropriate response. Several heavy rocks and boulders have been displaced and will need to be stabilised.
Any rain during this period could further compromise the escarpment.
Traffic control is in place at Webbs Creek Ferry and at Cliftonville Road to limit public access to property owners and residents. We appreciate the road closure will inconvenience residents and visitors to Wisemans Ferry, however the safety of the community is our number one priority.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
