Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne is encouraging residents to hold a sale at the annual Garage Sale Trail event on the weekend of October 21 and 22.
The nation-wide initiative, now in its seventh year, promotes community connectedness and provides a novel way for residents to declutter, reduce waste, make money and meet new people in the process.
Mayor Byrne said one way people could get involved in the initiative is to band together and raise funds for a charity of their choice.
“It’s a national movement of community-minded individuals who come together on one weekend to clear out their pre-loved belongings, find treasures, meet the neighbours and have some fun,” Mayor Byrne said.
“This year I am encouraging residents to come together and raise funds for their chosen charity.
“A garage sale is simple to organise, a great way to earn some extra money and to promote your cause to the wider community.
“The Hills Shire Council is pleased to promote Garage Sale Trail, which encourages people to rethink the idea of waste through reduce, reuse and recycle,” Mayor Byrne added.
Members from Rouse Hill Community Baptist Church have banded together to hold a garage sale during the annual event to raise much-needed funds to supply boxes for Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child (OCC).
OCC has hand-delivered over one hundred million boxes filled with clothes, toys, hygiene and school equipment gifts for needy children in developing countries.
Pastor Ric Sindel has delivered OCC boxes to children in Vietnam and has seen first-hand the enormous joy the boxes bring to the children who receive them.
Pastor Sindel encouraged residents and bargain shoppers to stop by the Rouse Hill Community Baptist Church garage sale on Saturday morning (October 21) in the Rouse Hill Storage King carpark, adjacent to Hudsons Building Supplies at the intersection of Mile End Road and Withers Road.
“A variety of household and personal goods will be available at very reasonable prices,” Pastor Sindel said.
“In addition, there will also be a yummy sausage sizzle running to help raise funds for the OCC boxes.”
More than 45 garage sales were registered in the area in 2016 and Mayor Byrne hopes more residents get involved this year.
The award-winning sustainability and community campaign was founded in 2010 and has grown from one event in Sydney to a massive national program supported by more than 54 local NSW Councils.
