Construction of Waves – a step closer
Published on 17 February 2020
The revitalisation of Waves in Baulkham Hills is another step closer after The Hills Shire Council shortlisted four construction companies - one of which could be chosen to complete the knock down and rebuild of the much-loved swim centre.
The companies will now be invited to complete a Request For Tender (RTF), which will help Council identify the best company for the job. The selection will be based on experience, demonstrated capability, price and capacity for delivering large scale projects.
“Many happy memories have been made at Waves by Hills locals for more than half a century - that’s why it’s important we find the best company who will not only modernise it, but ensure its reputation remains as a loved community asset,” Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne.
“There will be some short term pains during the 18 to 24 month closure, as construction takes place, but the end goal will totally be worth it.
“I’m incredibly proud Council is delivering this visionary state-of-the-art facility and I can’t wait to see this new community asset being enjoyed by residents for generations to come,” Mayor Byrne added.
Council approved a $55 million concept design for the new swim facility during the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 27th August 2019.
The concept plan includes:
- FINA Standard Olympic Sized 50m pool with 10 x lanes
- Combined indoor 25 metre learn to swim pool and family leisure pool
- Swimming club clubhouse
- Additional 20 metre warm water pool, including spa/sauna facilities
- Reception, retail and management spaces
- Large gym and fitness space
- Spectator seating
- Additional meeting/ program room
- Water play structure/ splash play area
- Basement car parking with lift access
- Indoor/outdoor café
- Group exercise and program rooms
Council also moved to adopt a Masterplan for the existing site, allowing the potential for further enhancements to be made at Waves in the future, including the inclusion of a 25 metre square pool and water slides.
Waves is scheduled to close on 31st March 2020 and Belgravia Leisure will continue to operate the facility up to this date. Construction will commence shortly after the site has been decommissioned and a construction company chosen for the knock down and rebuild.
