In June 2010 The Hills Shire Council invited all local primary school students who live in The Hills Shire to be involved in a creative expression as part of celebrating Local Government Week 2010 to win the prize of a Day in the Life of the Mayor.

Years K–2 could draw an A4 picture of “What I love about living in The Hills Shire” - while years 3-6 could enter online and write in 200 words “What I love about living in The Hills Shire”.

Melanie Hopman, a year 6 student from Rouse Hill Public School, was awarded the opportunity to be Mayor for the day and officially opened Local Government Week 2010 in The Hills Shire on Saturday August 7 2010. This is her winning entry:

Why I love living in The Hills Shire

There’s a knock on the door …
I open the door and see my neighbours standing outside wanting to know if I can play outside.

In my street there are about six kids that are constantly playing outside with me and my two sisters but there is always other kids coming outside to play throughout the whole area. I have lived in three different houses in The Hills Shire and all of them had a lovely neighbourhood.

My family and I have travelled to lots of different places and countries but there is no other place like The Hills Shire.

There are so many parks, rivers and bush areas to explore - it’s hard to name them all.

There are so many different sports to play such as netball, soccer, tennis, swimming, AFL, football, basketball, cricket and loads more. To make sport available we need the appropriate facilities and The Hills Shire has excellent sport facilities.

I can think of one million two thousand three hundred and seventy one other reasons why I love living in The Hills Shire but I am limited to two hundred words so I have to stop here.
