Currently The Hills and Hawkesbury Councils operate the ferry at Lower Portland with the cost of operation and maintenance of the ferry shared between the two Councils.
A survey of users in May 2018 found that there were approximately 500 individual trips made each week.
The cost of maintaining the service is currently just over $1 million a year and is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.
This cost is shared between the two Councils however, the operation of ferry services across NSW is generally a State Government function.
The Hills and Hawkesbury Councils recently held a community meeting to discuss the ongoing operation of the Lower Portland Ferry.
