Expressions of Interest for Coordinated Rabbit Baiting Program
Council is working with the Livestock Health & Pest Authority (LH&PA) (previously Rural Lands Protection Board) to coordinate a community rabbit baiting program within The Hills Shire.
Grazing by the European Rabbit has a major impact on our natural environment and on rural activities. This program aims to reduce rabbit numbers in key areas to reduce their impacts.
We are currently seeking Expressions of Interest from landholders who would like to take part in this program.
Participating landholders will be required to undertake an initial period of non-poison carrot baiting on their property, on Monday 15 February, Wednesday 17 February, and Friday 19 February, 2010.
Active baits (chopped carrots baited with Pindone poison) will then need to be laid on two specified days (Monday and Wednesday, unless prevented by rain) in the following week.
Council will coordinate landholders in the implementation of the baiting program under guidance from the LH&PA, and will also fund the cost of the Pindone baited carrots supplied by LH&PA.
We will be selecting key localised areas with high participation rates in order to achieve the greatest outcome.
If you are interested in participating in this program, please forward your name, address, contact number and whether you have carried out rabbit baiting previously, to Council marked ‘ATTN: Jon Midwinter’, via:
Post: The Hills Shire Council PO Box 75 Castle Hill NSW 1765
Fax: (02) 9843 0409
Email: jmidwinter@thehills.nsw.gov.au
Expressions of Interest are to be received by Council by Monday 8 February, 2010
Should you have any questions relating to this program, please contact Jon Midwinter, Council’s Sustainability Officer on 9843 0391.
