The Mayor of The Hills Shire, Clr Greg Burnett has described it as “a coup for our Shire” that the Oceania Region World Handball Championship Qualifier will be held in The Sydney Hills this week.

The Qualifying Tournament which will be held on Friday 22 & Saturday 23 June 2012 at the Dural Sport and Leisure Centre, is being contested by New Zealand and Australia.

The winner of the tournament will represent Oceania Region in the IHF XXIII Men’s Handball World Championship to be hosted by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation in January 2013.

“This is a significant handball event and we are delighted to be hosting Handball Australia here in The Sydney Hills for their qualifying tournament,” Mayor Burnett said.

“Handball is a game of strength, teamwork, mateship and above all true Australian spirit. I wish all the players and officials every success in the tournament.”

Before the Qualifier's match on Saturday, June 23, Mayor Burnett will be participating in a presentation of the National Team Uniform  to the Junior Girls Team on Saturday 23 June as they are  about to embark on a European tour to Spain and Italy.  Mayor Burnett will also be in the presentation for the Oceania Region Qualifier tournament.
