Online Databases

 

All Databases are available at all branches of the Library Service with the exception of the Statesman’s Year Book online, which is only available at Castle Hill Library. Many can also be accessed by Library members from home by clicking on the Database link, and entering your library card number.

IMPORTANT Conditions of Use:

Online Databases are governed by license agreements and are for personal, non-commercial use only. Specific license conditions for use of individual databases can be found within that database under headings such as “Terms of Use”, “Legal Information”, “Conditions of Use” or similar. It is important that you read and observe these terms and conditions.

Oxford Art Online

This Database provides access to the entire text of the 34 volumes of the Oxford Dictionary of Art. Subjects covered include the visual arts, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts and photography.

Oxford Music Online

The Oxford Music Online Database is an integrated music resource with encyclopaedia entries, written music examples and biographies of composers and performers. It includes the full text of the New Oxford Dictionary of Music & Musicians (29 volumes), the New Oxford Dictionary of Opera (4 volumes), and New Oxford Dictionary of Jazz (3 volumes).

A collection of Australian and International reference works, including the Macquarie Dictionary. Also contains resources such as current news articles, images and information on topical issues.

Oxford English Dictionary Online (OED)

The OED is an historical dictionary of English, covering the language from the earliest times to the present day. It provides current meanings and pronunciation as well as the history and usage of words.

Consumer Health Complete (CHC)

CHC provides full text articles covering all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated medicine. Topics include aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs and alcohol, fitness, nutrition and dietetics, children's health, men and women's health and many others.

Australia / New Zealand Reference Centre (ANZRC)

A collection of up-to-date magazines, newspapers, biographies, images and reference books. Gives access to full-text material from Australian/New Zealand and International sources such as Time, Australian and U.S. editions, Nature Australia, Australian Personal Computer and The Economist.

Designed specifically for public libraries, this database provides full text for more than 1,730 general periodicals covering a broad range of disciplines including general reference, business, education, health, general science, multi-cultural issues and much more.

An Australian resource with information on “Everything About Books” including thousands of easy to read independent book reviews and lots of interesting Australian and International articles, author profiles, stories on writers’ houses, bookshops, short stories, book trivia and more.

Literary Reference Center (LRC)

LRC is a completely full-text database that combines information on authors and their works from over 1,000 books, major literary encyclopaedias and reference works, hundreds of literary journals, and unique sources not available anywhere else.

NoveList

This database can be used to look for books by author, title, series, plot description or level of readership. NoveList also includes reviews, annotations, Author Read-alikes, What We're Reading, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Annotated Book Lists.

The Source

This database is a useful subject guide to a wide range of children's literature including picture books, junior and young adult novels, short stories and poetry. It also includes listing of various children's literature awards and prizes.

Tumblebooks is a digital collection of animated and talking children’s picture books. Also included in the Tumblebook Library is a selection of quizzes, puzzles and education games related to the books in the collection to help young readers.

This database provides full text for more than 600 science encyclopaedias, reference books, periodicals, etc. Topics covered include: biology, chemistry, earth and space science, environmental science, health and medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science and society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology and wildlife.

State Library of New South Wales Electronic Databases

 

New South Wales State Library Reader's Card Registration

The NSW State Library provides access from home to a selection of multi-disciplinary and comprehensive databases, including ProQuest 5000 and INFORMIT Online. To gain access to the databases you must be a New South Wales resident, must also be registered as a State Library client and must read and agree to conditions of access. Australian Bureau of Statistics Census Data

Statistics and information derived from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of 2001 and 2006. A range of data may be viewed by location or topic in thematic maps or tables. Includes classification counts, community profile data and the 'New South Wales in Focus' publications.

The Statesman's Yearbook Online

The Statesman's Yearbook online provides current information on history, politics, economics, trade and infrastructure for each country.  This site is the full text of the current edition of The Statesman's Yearbook, is regularly updated to reflect recent world events, with extensive search and browse facilities.  It also provides reading lists and web links for further research.
