Keeping Poultry

 

The following are the minimum standards that Council expects when keeping poultry (chickens, hens, roosters, fowl, geese, ducks etc). For more details read the Local Orders Policy - Keeping of Animals - Poultry -  Local Orders Policy - Keeping of Animals (61.18kB)

DucksGeneral

  • Peacocks, roosters, guinea fowls and turkeys are not to be kept in a residential environment due to their vocalisation abilities.
  • The keeping of poultry must not create a nuisance or danger to health.
  • The poultry yard must be kept clean and free from offensive odours.
  • The poultry yard must be enclosed to prevent poultry escaping.
  • The floor of the poultry yard (under the roosts and perches) must be constructed of either clean sand or an impervious surface.


Distances

  • Poultry both domesticated and guinea fowls must not be kept less than 4.5 metres from a dwelling, public hall, school or food premises.
  • Poultry other than fowls including duck, geese, turkey, peafowl and other pheasants, must not be kept less than 30 metres from a dwelling, public hall, school or food premises.

Fowls (chickens), Pheasants, Quails - 10


Approval for the construction of the poultry yard is not required if it complies with the following:

Residential areas

  • Maximum area 10m
  • Maximum height 2.1m above natural ground level
  • Located in rear yard
  • Not closer than 500mm from adjoining boundaries 
  • Constructed of non-reflective material 


Rural areas

  • Maximum area 50m
  • Maximum height 3m
  • No more than one per property
  • Constructed of non-reflective material
  • Adequate drainage must be provided
