Recent Additions To the Sustainable Home Demonstrations Site
The Community Environment Centre has had more installations and devices added to the building to demonstrate sustainable building options.
The previous installations included:
- Solar hot system
- Solar panels
- Louvre windows
- Window tinting
- Roof insulation
- Double glazed windows
- 5 star energy rated appliances
For more information, please see Sustainable Home Demonstration (PDF)
The new installations and devices include:
- Roof ventilation units
- Ceiling fan
- Skylights / solar tubes
- Lighting comparsion display board
- Powermates
- Easy off foot switched
- Easy off remote devices
- Plug in energy monitors
Ventilation units
Two ventilation units have been installed along the ridge line of the roof. This will assist with maintaining a cooler temperature in summer and minimise water leaks associated with a low pitch roof. The improved air flow will assist with regulation of the temperature eliminating the need for air conditioning.
Ceiling fans
The installation of ceiling fans combined with the roof insulation and vents has meant the elimination of the Centre’s old inefficient air conditioning unit. This will reduce energy consumption and reduce the emissions of green house gases while at the same time reducing energy costs.
Skylights
Three Solar Tubes have been installed in the various rooms at the Centre. These tubes have dramatically increased the amount of natural light entering the building. This will reduce the need for switching on lights, reducing electrical energy use and greenhouse gas emissions .
Lighting comparison display unit
The mobile display unit will allow residents to compare the amount of light generated by both traditional and new energy efficient globes. This comparison will enable resident to make better choices when replacing old inefficient lights in their homes and offices. More energy efficient lights reduce energy consumption and energy bills.
Powermates
Powermates are instruments or meters which will allow visitors to the centre to measure the energy use of different appliances found within the building e.g. Microwave, fridge, fan, etc. The meters will enable residents who want to conduct a household energy audit to identify inefficient applications and overall energy use. The meters will also calculate energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions in your home.
The Powermates will soon be available for loan to residents from the council and the Community Environment Centre after a trial has been conducted internally by council staff.
A range of Energy Efficient Devices (EEDs)
A range of Energy Efficient Devices (EEDs) are also on exhibition at the Community Environment Centre including
- Easy Off Foot switches
- Easy Off Remote devices
- Plug in energy monitors
- Non contact thermometers
These EEDs will reduce the use of energy used by appliances which are left on standby.
Standby power can consume 10% of a household energy bill. These devices will also identify inefficient electrical appliances and allow residents to do an energy audit on these appliances or on the overall household energy usage.
The Hills Shire Council Sustainability section will be offering these devices as give-aways to visitors to the Community Environment Centre/Sustainable Home Demonstration Site and participants in councils sustainability events during the upcoming promotion period.
Please refer to the Hills Shire Council events webpage to stay updated on these events and workshops.
